Latin 395/Computer Science 335: The Herculaneum Graffiti Project

Students in Winter 2013 Latin 395: Latin Epigraphy and Spring 2013 Computer Science 335 developed The Ancient Graffiti Project, a website that provides a search engine for locating and studying graffiti of the early Roman empire from the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.  The transcribed inscriptions were also contributed to Electronic Archive of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (EAGLE), an international federation of epigraphic databases that aims to make all Latin and Greek inscriptions through the seventh century A.D. available online.  These students were taught by Rebecca Benefiel, Associate Professor of Classics, and Sara Sprenkle, Associate Professor of Computer Science.
